Day 6 -- 07/25/04

Called to check on Joshua at 6:00 AM, and the nurse said he had a great night!  His blood gases are good, and he's at about 24% oxygen.  When she weighed him, he'd gained an ounce...2 pounds, 6 ounces -- back up almost to his birth weight.  When we went to visit around midday, he was doing well.  No major changes in any of his numbers, and everything is progressing normally.  When we went back around 5:00, he was back under the lights...his bilirubin had rebounded from 2 back up to 7, but they aren't concerned about it...they say it's a very common occurrence, and the phototherapy light (I call it his tanning bed) helps with it.

Went back to see Josh around 10:00 PM.  He had to go up a little on his oxygen while we were there, but as soon as the nurse (Maggie) suctioned him, she was able to take it back down.  She weighed him while we were there, and he is holding steady at 2 pounds, 6 ounces.  Once she suctioned him and turned him over, we got to spend a little time with him, and when we were getting ready to leave, I got to put his little sunglasses back on him (they hook to these little Velcro patches on his head)...I know it sounds silly, but it's just nice to get my hands on him and feel like I can do even the smallest thing for him.  Once I got his shades on, I got to get him all re-situated so that his head was supported and he didn't roll himself over and pull out tubes.  The top was up on his isolette from where Maggie was working on him, so before we left, we actually got to lean in and give him a kiss goodnight on his little head...what a WONDERFUL feeling!!!  It's amazing how much the little things mean...just getting to give him a kiss goodnight really made me feel great!
